In a significant move ahead of next year's general election, two high-profile personalities in Nepali politics have joined forces. This alliance comes in the wake of large-scale and fatal young people's demonstrations that rocked the country earlier this year and eventually resulted in the ouster of the sitting government.
A Commitment to Address Youth Demands
Television host Rabi Lamichhane, who heads the Rastriya Swatantra Party (RSP), and Kathmandu Mayor Balendra Shah, a former rapper, have officially pledged to prioritize the issues highlighted by the younger generation. This commitment follows the violent anti-graft protests that took place in September, which resulted in significant casualties.
"Agreement should not be what a leader wants, it should be what the nation requires," remarked Lamichhane after the agreement was signed.
The September revolt was triggered by widespread anger over a short-lived government ban on social media platforms. This action served as a spark for deeper resentment stemming from years of slow growth and persistent allegations of deep-rooted political corruption.
Details of the Fresh Political Partnership
According to the official pact, the roles for the approaching election have been clarified. Rabi Lamichhane will continue to serve as the chairperson of the RSP. Meanwhile, Balendra Shah will be the party's nominee for the role of prime minister in the election set for 5 March.
- Rabi Lamichhane: A well-known fifty-one-year-old TV host, he established the RSP in 2022, capturing widespread public dissatisfaction with the nation's established political leadership. He has previously held the positions of deputy prime minister and interior minister. He was recently freed on bail in a case involving alleged cooperative fraud and organized crime.
- Balendra Shah (Balen): The thirty-five-year-old mayor of Kathmandu is viewed as a central figure in Nepal's ongoing political transition. He played a role in forming the interim government that came to power after the previous administration was removed.
Broader Political Consultations Taking Place
In a related event, the current interim prime minister recently conducted consultations with several leading political leaders. These discussions included former prime ministers and the presidents of rival mainstream parties, marking the first such gathering since the period of the protests.
Following these meetings, the prime minister posted on social media to state that holding a credible election is a shared duty. The statement reiterated the government's dedication to guaranteeing a safe and fear-free atmosphere for the electoral process, adding that efforts are being made to remove any uncertainty.
